What is a brace?
Contrary
to popular belief, it is possible to correct the alignment of your
teeth at any age. Today, more and more adults are taking the plunge!
They are now responsible for more than 47% of orthodontic treatments. "
To meet this demand, new types of dental appliances have been developed
in recent years. In the
collective imagination, a dental device necessarily has rings, but this
is not true: other types of devices exist today. The device can be
affixed to the back of the teeth: this is the lingual technique. "Even
better, the adults are now offered transparent ethylene
polyterephthalate gutters. They give results as accurate as traditional
dental braces.
When can wear it?
Braces
are required in case of abnormalities, dental malpositions, when there
is not enough space between teeth, when teeth overlap, when there is
dento-maxillary disharmony or diastema spaces between teeth. But
it is not only a question of realigning the teeth aesthetically: it is
also a question of ensuring their good function. For
example, in case of malocclusion (when the opposite teeth meet badly,
because the upper and lower jaws are not correlated) or supraclusion,
symptoms may occur: jaw cracking, friction between the upper and lower
teeth, etc. This can increase tooth aging. In this case, the dental brace is indicated for medical reasons so that this defect does not worsen.
Is it painful?
A dental brace is less painful today than it was in the 2000s because the techniques
have evolved: the rings are miniaturized and less unpleasant, the
threads are more flexible and overall better supported. It is
obviously painful at the beginning, since we put an effort on the teeth,
but it remains very bearable.
